How to download a GIF from X

Copy the post link. Tap the share icon under the GIF, then Copy link.
Paste it above. Press Download. The GIF · silent option is moved to the top and highlighted.
Save. Press Save. The GIF is made on our server and your download starts.

Why X GIFs aren't really GIFs

When you post a GIF on X, X quietly turns it into a short MP4 video. That keeps files small, but it means a normal "save" gives you a video, not a GIF.

SnapFrom turns that video back into a proper GIF. The result loops on its own, has no play button and works in places that don't accept video, like some chat apps, forums, slides and email.

What size will the GIF be?

To keep GIFs usable, we make them at most 320 pixels wide and 8 frames per second, with a reduced colour palette. That looks fine in a chat window and keeps the file reasonable.

In our test, a 6-second clip from X made a GIF of about 500 KB. Clips with lots of movement or colour make bigger GIFs than simple ones.

Why only clips up to 15 seconds?

GIFs grow very quickly with length. A one-minute GIF could easily be tens of megabytes, too big for most apps to accept. So the GIF option only appears for clips of 15 seconds or less. For anything longer, you'll see a short note, and you can save the MP4 instead.

Which posts work?

Public posts on x.com or twitter.com that contain a GIF or short video.
Not posts from protected accounts.
Not posts hidden behind a login or a sensitive-content warning.
If a post has several GIFs, SnapFrom uses the first.

Using your GIF

iPhone: the GIF is saved in the Files app. Open it and tap Share, then Save Image to add it to Photos, where it still animates.
Android: find it in the Download folder. Most gallery apps play GIFs.
Computer: drag it into a chat, a slide or an email, and it plays on loop.

Reusing GIFs fairly

Reaction GIFs are shared freely online, but many come from TV shows, films or creators' own videos. Using one in a personal chat is normal. Using it in ads or products needs permission.

If something goes wrong

"No GIF for this post": the clip is longer than 15 seconds.
"We couldn't make a GIF": the conversion failed. Save the MP4 instead.
"Private or needs a login": the post isn't public.
Save stopped working: Save buttons last 30 minutes. Paste the link again.

Twitter GIF questions

Does the GIF have sound?

No. GIF files can't hold sound. If the clip has sound you want, save the MP4.

Why is the GIF bigger than the MP4?

GIF is an old format that compresses poorly. MP4 is far more efficient.

Can I choose a bigger GIF size?

Not at the moment. We keep GIFs small so they work in most apps.

Do I need an X account?

No login is needed.

Are files kept?

No. Both the clip and the GIF are deleted after sending. See our privacy policy.
